The first flame of a legend
Primus – Latin for “the first” – marks the beginning of a new era at the Weihbrecht winery. First created in 2011 by young winemaker Simon Weihbrecht, this expressive red wine set the standard for the bold yet elegant style that characterizes the winery today.
The cuvée of Merlot and Lemberger comes from the best vineyards in the Himmelreich and matures in small barrique barrels to develop structure, complexity and ageability.
In the glass, Primus is a deep, dark ruby red with violet reflections. The nose is inviting and concentrated with aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and hints of pepper, vanilla, clove and bitter chocolate, subtly framed by woody notes.
On the palate, the wine is velvety and full-bodied, with a firm structure and balanced acidity that carries the fullness. The dark fruit aromas – especially blackcurrant and cherry – continue, accompanied by bitter chocolate, freshly ground black pepper and clove, integrated into fine, polished tannins and subtle barrique contact. A long-lasting, spicy finish rounds off this characterful yet elegant wine.
Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with smoked duck breast, lentil salad, grilled red meat or game dishes. Also goes well with spiced root vegetables and strong sauces.
Serving Suggestions
Serve at 16-18 °C. Decant for 30-45 minutes before serving to allow the complex aromas to develop and the structure to soften.
